Paul was born in the Boston suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of William and Anna Lester Pender. He was graduated from Brookline High School in 1949. Pender was recruited as an All-American football player by Michigan State and Penn State but he go for professional boxing while attending Staley College. However, he was a champion in boxing. He considers boxing to be his second job and a Brooklyn firefighter his first.

He was an amateur, he won the New England welterweight title. Now, Paul was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
