Hall previously worked as an assistant coach at the University of Central Missouri (originally Central Missouri State University) and Regis University before returning to Kentucky in 1965 to work under Adolph Rupp. On April 1, 1972, Hall was appointed as the new coach after Rupp reached the obligatory retirement age of 70.
He led the Wildcats to their fifth NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship in the 1978 NCAA Tournament. In 1978, he was elected National Coach of the Year, and he was named Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year four times. He won eight Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and one Southeastern Conference tournament title. The University of Kentucky dedicated a statue of Hall outside the Wildcat Coal Lodge on September 18, 2012, to recognize his achievements at UK and contributions to the Wildcat Coal Lodge.

From March 2004 through October 2014, Hall co-hosted a radio sports talk show with former University of Louisville basketball head coach Denny Crum.
