DP Ruto Running Mate Search

Deputy President William Ruto’s search for a running mate from the Mt Kenya region has been greeted with a new puzzle due to the growing ill will between the western and eastern sides.

Leaders from Mt Kenya East, which comprises Meru, Tharaka Nithi, and Embu, have declared that they will part ways with their western counterparts if one of their own is not backed for the presidency.

This has made it difficult for the DP to choose his presidential running mate.

Among those eyeing the position are Rigathi Gachagua, Kithure Kindiki, Moses Kuria, Mithika Linturi, and Moses Kuria.

10 Soldiers Die in Helicopter Crash

At least 10 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers lost their lives after their military chopper crash-landed at Ol Tepesi in Ngong, Kajiado County, on Thursday morning, 24th June.

Fortunately, 13 of their colleagues escaped death with serious injuries and were airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.

The Mi171E helicopter was on a training mission when it crashed and burst into flames.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the Russian-made plane flying zigzag before it came down.

MPs Reject Taxes on Bread

Lawmakers from the National Assembly have finally voted to turn down a proposal by the Treasury to introduce Value Added Tax (VAT) on bread and maize flour.

The MPs said the two items were basic commodities and that taxing them would lead to more suffering of the already overburdened taxpayer.

The legislators also exempted infant foods and infant food preparation items from VAT.

BBI Appeal Case

The hearing for the appeal lodged by promoters of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in the Appellate Court will begin on Tuesday next week.

This is after Court of Appeal president Daniel Musinga appointed a seven-panel bench to to hear the petition. Musinga will chair the bench.

He will work with judges Patrick Kiage, Hannah Okwengu, Gatembu Kairu, Fatuma Sichache, Roselyne Nambuye, and Francis Tuiyott.

The suit was filed after the High Court shot down the BBI-backed Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2020.

Anne Kananu Wins Against Sonko

Acting Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu got a reprieve yesterday after the High Court ruled that her appointment to the position of deputy governor by impeached city boss Mike Sonko was done within the legal framework.

Weeks before his ouster, Sonko revoked Kananu’s appointment, but that did not stop her installation as the deputy county boss shortly after the former governor was impeached.

Sonko moved to court for reinstatement, arguing that the swearing-in of Kananu was unconstitutional.

Kabogo in Ksh4.5 Billion Land Row

A private developer in the vast Tatu City project in Machakos County has sued former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo for allegedly trying to blackmail investors into giving bribes.

Stephen Jennings, one of the major shareholders in the Tatu City development, says in court documents that Kabogo is holding onto several title deeds in an attempt to have the firm surrender a five per cent stake to him.

However, the ex-county boss says that the agreement was that he would get at least Ksh4.5 billion from the investment.

Detectives Link Woman to Husband Death

Detectives now believe a Kenyan woman plotted the killing of her Dutch husband and tried to play victim.

On 6th June, Riziki Cherono, while near Serena Beach Hotel, asked for help from police, telling them she had been driven there by unknown people from her apartment in Roco, Shanzu, in Mombasa County.

When the men in uniform escorted her home, they found her husband, Herman Rouwenhorst dead.

After weeks of investigations, accounts by two witnesses have linked the woman to the killing.

KRA Auction

The three-day public auction approved by the Kenya Revenue Authority in Mombasa ended yesterday, with the taxman raking in Ksh201.4 million.

According to port operations chief manager Abdi Malik, more than half of the money was netted from the sale of consolidated cargo while the rest amount was collected from motor vehicle purchases and re-offers.

Patient Succumbs to Covid-19 While Waiting to be Attended to

As counties in the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) continue to face challenges in fighting challenges in fight against Covid-19, a patient died while waiting to be admitted to the Kakamega Referral Hospital.

According to reports, the patient had contracted Covid-19, but the isolation wards were full.

Health officials in the region have revealed that hospitals have been running out of medical oxygen.

Youths Denounce Al-Shabaab

At least 300 youth have been accepted back to Kenya unconditionally after they opted out of Al-shabaab terrorist group.

Canon Harun Rashid of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) said the young men had been lured to join the militia, get military training in Somalia and then return to Kenya to launch attacks.

“The government has now profiled and is guiding them so that they don’t slide back into terrorism,” Rashid said.
