Tokyo Police Investigating Death of Olympic Official

Police in Tokyo are reported to be investigating the death on Monday of Moriya Yasushi, a senior member of the Japan Olympic Committee.

Citing police sources, Nippon Television reported that Moriya jumped in front of an underground train at Nakanobu station, in Shinagawa ward. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead two hours later. Police are treating the incident as death by suicide, according to the broadcaster.

The 52-year-old Moriya was head of the JOC’s accounting department. It is not known whether his death was in any way connected to the upcoming Olympic Games, which are due to be held in July 23 – Aug. 8, 2021.

Holding the games under current public health conditions and with a significantly disrupted economy, is reported to be unpopular with a majority of the Japanese population. In May, the influential Asahi Shimbun newspaper, which is a Tokyo 2020 sponsor, called for the event to be canceled. Due to ongoing coronavirus control measures, it was announced in March that the games would be held without the participation of fans coming from abroad.

Nevertheless, the International Olympic Committee says the games will be held come what may, and first teams have started to arrive in Japan.

A contract between Tokyo and the IOC means that the city would be liable to pay billions of dollars in compensation payments should the city unilaterally decide to cancel.

If you or anyone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please a suicide hotline for help. In the U.S. the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-8255. For a list of hotlines in other countries please click here.
