‘The Conjuring,’ ‘Peter Rabbit 2’ Lead U.K. Box Office

Warner Bros.’ chiller “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” topped the box office with £2,708,455 ($3,839,694) in its opening week as the U.K. basked in late May sunshine and a long bank holiday weekend.

The good weather that traditionally keeps audiences outdoors did not appear to have a detrimental effect on the box office, with Sony’s family-friendly “Peter Rabbit 2” scoring £2,045,999 in its second week in second place, according to numbers released by Comscore.

However, if going purely by weekend numbers, “Peter Rabbit 2” collected £2 million, a shade over the £1.9 million taken by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”

“Peter Rabbit 2” has now collected more than £7,484,061 in the U.K. Upcoming key market releases for the film include China (June 11), Japan (June 25), France (June 30), Germany (July 1), Italy (July 1), Spain (July 16) and Brazil (August 26).

Disney’s “Cruella” opened simultaneously on streamer Disney Plus and in cinemas and collected £1,453,635 in third place.

Another new opener, Sony’s manga “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” took in a healthy £693,081 in fourth place, while Warner Bros.’ holdover “Godzilla Vs. Kong” collected £254,172 in fifth position.

Disney’s Oscar darling “Nomadland” continued its steady accumulation with a further £181,702, taking its total to £1,433,376 in sixth place. Rounding off the top 10 were Lionsgate’s “Spiral: From The Book Of Saw,” Warner Bros.’ “Tom and Jerry,” Disney’s “Raya And The Last Dragon” and Warner Bros.’ “Mortal Kombat.”

The upcoming week sees the release of John Krasinski’s keenly anticipated sequel “A Quiet Place Part II,” starring Emily Blunt, from Paramount, and Aleem Khan’s Cannes Critics’ Week selection “After Love,” from BFI Distribution. Other notable openers include Robin Wright’s feature directorial debut “Land,” starring herself, from Universal; Viktor Kosakovskiy’s beloved farmyard documentary “Gunda,” from Altitude; acclaimed relationship drama “The Killing of Two Lovers” from Curzon; and family friendly “Dream Horse,” with Toni Collette and Damian Lewis, from Warner Bros.
