‘Starstruck’ Second Season Ordered by HBO Max, BBC

Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning comedian, writer and actor Rose Matafeo’s romcom “Starstruck” has been greenlit for a second six-part series by HBO Max and the U.K.’s BBC Three.

Co-written by Matafeo, Alice Snedden and Nic Sampson, and produced by Avalon, the second season will continue the story of Jessie (Matafeo), a millennial living in East London juggling two dead end jobs and navigating the complications of becoming romantically involved with famous film star Tom, played by Nikesh Patel (Channel 4’s “Indian Summers”). Minnie Driver (“Modern Love”) will reprise her role as Tom’s agent Cath, while Russell Tovey (“Years and Years”) joins the cast.

The first season premieres on HBO Max on Thursday. It debuted recently on BBC Three and became the channel’s best performing new comedy of the year with over three million requests on streamer BBC iPlayer.

Matafeo said: “Thrilled that ‘Starstruck’ will be returning to the BBC Three for a second series, because I left my water bottle on set last year and I would love to get it back.”

“Starstruck” was commissioned by Shane Allen, director of comedy at the BBC and Fiona Campbell, controller, BBC Three.

Allen said: “The first series of ‘Starstruck’ came as a joyous breath of fresh air and we can’t wait to see what Rose, Alice and Nic have in store for Jessie and Tom in the next chapter of their story.”

Executive producers are Rose Matafeo, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett and Toby Welch. Claire McCarthy is series producer. Gregor Sharp is the commissioning editor for the BBC, and Jeniffer Kim is senior VP of international content for HBO Max.

“Rose is an exciting talent whose international stardom is on the rise. Working with Rose and the team at Avalon has been amazing and so we had to keep it going,” added Kim. “We can’t wait for audiences to see this hilarious and quirky love story.”

The two seasons of “Starstruck” will also air on ABC in Australia and TVNZ in New Zealand.

Matafeo was one of the star presenters at the BAFTA TV awards last week.
