Deputy President William Ruto has issued a statement on the arrest of Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua.

In his statement, the deputy president has said that violence against his friends would end, signaling that after the 2022 General Elections the Jubilee term would be over.

“They know each other, they have held high positions, they have influence and advocates but we have God. The difficulties we are going through now because of our friendship will only come to an end,” Ruto said on Friday, July 23, 2021.

His statement comes just hours after the Mathira MP was arrested in Nyeri by about 20 officers from the Intelligence Department.

His arrest sparked online attacks and even some of his supporters marched in protest, demanding his release. Speaking to reporters heading to the DCI offices, the MP accused the government of declaring war on him because of his reliance on the deputy president’s side.

“I want to tell the people of Mathira to ignore the rumors, their MP has not stolen anything, these are baseless allegations of intimidating me for my political position. They only wanted to arrest me on Friday to stop me all weekend but it is all right,” he hinted.

Gachagua claimed he was arrested for allegedly embarrassing the presidency during the recently concluded Kiambaa by-elections, in which the national leader’s party was stripped of its seat by a UDA candidate.

The MP’s ordeal began in October last year when he was arrested by DCI and then interrogated in connection with the alleged KSh 12.5B he allegedly had in his accounts.

In an interview with Citizen Television on Tuesday, July 20, the MP said he had evidence of when he gave his money, including arranging dances at the university when he made a big profit.
