Wayne Rooney has dismissed reports former teammate and Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo will move to rivals Manchester City.

Rooney and Ronaldo played 209 games together at Manchester United between 2004-2009, winning three Premier League titles and a Champions League crown as they secured legendary status at the club.

However, Ronaldo now looks increasingly likely to tarnish his revered reputation at Old Trafford, with reports emerging that he has agreed personal terms with City, and Juventus want him off their wage bill.

Rooney, who’s now Derby boss, would still be shocked to see the move happen, saying: “It’s an interesting one but I can’t see it,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think Cristiano has got a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and a person. I can’t see it, but it’s football so you never know.”

There have been seven players to play for both Manchester sides in the Premier League era, many of them high-profile, but Rooney believes Ronaldo is different to those before.

“There have been a few that have done it but no one at Cristiano’s level,” Rooney said. “Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I just can’t see that as an option for him really.

“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do it. I think it’s more likely that it’s PSG he goes to.”

The former United and Everton striker was asked about moving to rivals, having himself been heavily linked to a switch to Man City back in 2010.

“I think you need to do what’s right for you as a person, for your family,” Rooney said. “Everyone knows I could never play for Liverpool or Manchester City. That’s obvious but everyone’s different.

“I think people move to clubs where they don’t really want to but from a financial point of view that might be the only option they have, so I might get it from some people’s point of view.
“But in terms of myself that just wouldn’t be an option.”
