Political Scientist Says He Believes Uhuru Will Not Support Raila’s 2022 Bid

It is very possible that President Uhuru Kenyatta has not settled on his preffered successor and the presidential candidate he will rally behind in 2022 yet, political scientist Peter Wanyande says.

This is even as everything points at ODM leader Raila Odinga being the President’s anointed one, judging by remarks from Uhuru’s allies, some of whom have been working closely with the former Premier.

But the commentator argues that this might not be the case, observing that Uhuru’s decision to associate himself with several other top politicians suggests otherwise; that he isn’t decided yet.

To him, it is possible that the President is yet to identify a strong candidate who can easily beat his embattled deputy William Ruto, hence his friendliness to the likes of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.

He told The Standard that chances are also high that Uhuru is not sure of what will happen at the ballot and has decided to be friendly to all to avoid being mistreated by any of the candidates who will win.

This comes as those seen as likely to get his ultimate endorsement try to outdo each other, apparently to impress him, with Mudavadi’s camp arguing that their leader is the best bet the President has for now.

“And this is critical, considering that in the absence of Uhuru, the winner of the August presidential poll could well be decided by this vote-rich region. Because Mudavadi is a more acceptable candidate here, he is our best bet to deliver the presidency,” ANC Deputy Party Leader Ayub Savula told the paper.

Raila, on the other hand, has for fifteen years been seen as hard sell in the Mt Kenya region, the determinant of Kenyan elections, after years of fighting presidential aspirants from the region.

But despite Savula’s claims, recent reports suggested that Uhuru is aware that Raila is the more nationally accepted leader, which he told Mudavadi and his fellow OKA chiefs at the Mombasa State Lodge.

This he allegedly told them while trying to convince them to drop their presidential bids and back the veteran politician.
