CALABAR–FOLLOWING confusion among youth in Cross River State’s Ovonum Obubra Local Government Area, one person allegedly has been hacked to death while many sustained serious machete wounds.
One boy was hacked to death on Valentine’s Day night, whose name was given as Ose Egor, and his body was deposited in the mortuary.
The misunderstanding began when youth gathered at the local beach, popularly called Ovonum beach for Valentine’Day fanfare, according to Okpa Okpa, our source in the area, but misunderstanding erupted when one of the girls left her boyfriend with whom she went to the beach to hitch up with another guy.
“One girl whose name was given as Anne left Tony the boy who brought her to the beach to join another boy and Tony didn’t take this kindly so she had to ask the girl to come back and a fight broke out among the boys in the ensuing faceoff,” Okpa said.
He said the conflict became a gang war from the beach and spread to village and gangs were moving from house to house with machetes burning homes of boys belonging to opposing cult groups.
“Mr Monday Abeng, the leader of the Peace Group, who tried to make peace among the warring gangs, was lured out of his house and attacked with machetes that left him beyond recognition.”
He said that in the night many homes were destroyed and the police arrived early this morning to make some arrests that restored some normalcy.
“The boy who was killed is in the mortuary of the Obubra General Hospital, but his gang is threatening to take him out of the mortuary, so the police are now watching over the place.”
Ms Irene Ugbo, the spokesman for the Cross River Police Command, said more policemen were moved to the area to keep the peace.
