Just In; Gor Mahia, Al – Ahly Merowe Tie Cancelled
The Sunday’s second leg tie of CAF Confederations Cup pitting hosts Gor Mahia and visitors Al Ahly Merowe of Sudan at Nyayo National Stadium has been cancelled.
Merowe through Sudan’s football governing body wrote to CAF notifying the continental soccer administration about the development;
“Reference the above mentioned match, we would like to inform you that the Sudanese federation have communicated the withdrawal of the club Al Ahly Merowe from the competition,” the letter read in part.
The development now means the home team sails through to the next Preliminary round of the contests.
Gor Mahia outdid the Sudanese outfit 3-1 in the first leg meeting between the two sides away last week.
“Accordingly, we hereby inform you that the match is cancelled and that Gor Mahia have been qualified to the additional 2nd Preliminary round of the competition.
” The host federation is kindly requested to proceed with the financial payment of officials. A detailed decision will be communicated to all concerned parties in due course.”
Meanwhile, Football Kenya Federation has prohibited fans who had earlier plans of attending the particular fixture even after the government had on Friday given a go ahead for supporters to grace the event.
Gor Mahia had allowed a total of 10,000 spectators back in the stadium for the first time since March 2020 owing to coronavirus restrictions.
“The Federation insists Caf have not yet communicated whether fans should be allowed in the aforementioned fixture. The federation, whilst remaining cognizant of the Ministry’s directive and commitment towards ensuring a safe sporting environment for players and fans, will continue to seek FIFA and CAF’s approval for local clubs participating in CAF Interclub competitions and national team assignments,” read part of the communication from FKF signed by CEO Barry Otieno.
“In this regard, and immediately upon receipt of the government approval of 10,000 fans to attend tomorrow’s CAF Confederations Cup fixture between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly Merowe, at the Nyayo National Stadium, the federation sought for CAF’s concurrence and approval to avoid any possible sanctions.
Gor Mahia had on Saturday communicated to their faithful about the ticketing information ahead of the same fixture but it will take a little bit longer before fans finally access stadia in the country.
“Regrettably, the federation has not received feedback from the African football governing body, as such and in consultation with Gor Mahia FC and Sports Stadia decided that tomorrow’s CAF Confederations Cup fixture between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly Merowe will be played behind closed doors with no fans”.
