Joseph Yobo Named Assistant Coach for Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles defender and captain Joseph Yobo has been named by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as team’s assistant coach.

The former Everton defender will take the place of Imama Amapakabo in the senior men’s national team’s technical crew.

During the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship (now known as the FIFA U20 World Cup) he was playing for the NigeriaU-20 team, the Flying Eagles.

In an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match away to Zambia in Chingola in April 2001, the attack-minded defender won his first cap for the senior team, and played in three FIFA World Cup finals in 2002, 2010 and 2014.

He has played in six finals of the 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, capping it with guiding the Super Eagles to their third continental championship in 2013 in South Africa. He had played a total of 100 senior-level matches for Nigeria.

A detailed and committed professional who played his football club in five nations, including impressive appearances on the French top flight for Olympique Marseille, Fenerbahce in Turkey and Everton FC in the English Premiership, Joseph Yobo scored numerous key goals for the Super Eagles in major qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. He was also among the scorers when the Eagles thrashed Bafana Bafana 4-0 from South Africa in a group-phase match in Tunisia 16 years ago.

The flamboyant stopper, born Joseph Michael Yobo on 6 September 1980, also played football club in Belgium with Standard Liege, Tenerife in Spain and Norwich City in England, having started with Michellin-Harcourt in Rivers State in 1996.
