John Boyega Exits ‘Rebel Ridge’ Mid-Shoot Due to ‘Family Reasons’

John Boyega has left Netflix movie “Rebel Ridge” mid-shoot, citing “family reasons” as the cause for his sudden exit.

While production is paused, Netflix is currently working to replace the “Star Wars” actor within the next few days. Filming for “Rebel Ridge” started on May 3 in Louisiana.

“‘Rebel Ridge’ is pausing temporarily as we look to re-cast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. “We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film ‘They Cloned Tyrone’ in which he also stars.”

Starring Don Johnson, James Badge Dale, James Cromwell, AnnaSophia Robb, Emory Cohen, Erin Doherty, Zsane Jhe and Al Vicente, “Rebel Ridge” is said to explore systemic inequality in America in the context of action, suspense and dark humor. While the film was originally set to begin filming in April 2020, the pandemic pushed it back over a year.

Saulnier, who is best known for “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room,” directs and produces alongside Anish Savjani, Neil Kopp and Vincent Savino. Macon Blair and Louise Lovegrove serve as executive producers.

Boyega is also set to star in Netflix’s upcoming “They Cloned Tyrone,” opposite Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris. The actor first gained prominence for playing Moses in the sci-fi comedy film “Attack the Block” (which is getting a sequel), but he later reached international stardom portraying Finn in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy films: “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker.”

Deadline first reported news of the departure.
