Issa Rae joins the cast of Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse sequel

Yes, Issa Rae is joining the amazing world of Into the Spiderverse.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Emmy-nominated actress has been chosen to voice Jessica Drew, aka Spiderwoman.

Rae, the star of HBO’s comedy-drama Insecure is the first new cast member announced. She joins a crew that already includes Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, who are reprising their roles of Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man, and Spider-Gwen respectively. Hopefully, Jake Johnson‘s Peter B. Parker, John Mulaney‘s Peter Porker/Spider-Ham, Nicolas Cage‘s Spider-Man Noir, and Kimiko Glenn’s Peni Parker will also return in the sequel.

This will also be one of Rae’s first experiences as a voice actor; she had previously “appeared” on two episodes of BoJack Horseman, playing a therapist .

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are directing the film. With Phil Lord and Christopher Miller returning to produce and contribute to the script.

There are no details regarding the plot of this sequel yet but we can already assume it’ll involved multiple Spider people and alternate dimensions like the first film.

In the first film, high schooler Miles Morales exists in an alternate dimension where Spider-Man has been killed. When Miles is bitten by a radioactive spider, he suddenly develops Spider-Man powers himself – and encounters a group of other Spider-People from alternate dimensions who are all trying to get back home.

The film’s inventive animation and funny, heartfelt script made it one of the best superhero movies in recent memory. Arguably the best Spider-Man movie ever. The movie won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and also grossed $375.5 million at the global box office.

The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is set for October 7, 2022.
