For some time now, Machakos governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has managed to keep off issues that have nothing to do with his office. He has instead focused on his official duties, and this has gone a long way in keeping people off his back concerning events pertaining to his personal life. However, he seems to have broken out of his shell, and has done so with a bang. He made a huge announcement, and in the clearest indication that he intends to make it an unconventional war, he didn’t use formal means to make the announcement. Instead of an official press release, he blurted it live on air.
The governor, who also happens to be a former government spokesman during the Kibaki era made the announcement while appearing on Citizen TV’s daily morning show Daybreak which was hosted by Trevor Ombija. Also on the show was Kiambu County Senator and Senate Chief Whip Kimani Wamatangi, former Kakamega senator Bonny Khalwale, and human rights activist Jerotich Seii.
Mutua said it made absolutely no sense that more than ten years after the promulgation of the 2010 constitution, not all Kenyans in the diaspora could vote. He decried this reality, noting that a kid born in 2010 was now nearing teen age. He said it was totally unforgivable that some Kenyans in the diaspora continue to be disenfranchised despite their right to vote being enshrined in the constitution. Abruptly, he then disclosed that as a matter of fact, he would be going to court to raise up the issue.
While it is possible that it is the government that Mutua will mention as respondents, it is most likely that the respondents will be the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
This will be a marked change for the governor and the electoral body when it comes to the court. The last time the two were in the courts, they were on the same side and arguing against Wavinya Ndeti who had opened a case against them, protesting her loss in the 2017 Machakos gubernatorial race.
