Bruno Guimaraes to get dream Arsenal shirt number if he seals £38m January transfer.

Arsenal have been tipped to strengthen their first-team squad now that the January transfer window is officially open

Midfield is likely to be the focus for Mikel Arteta and Edu as the Gunners will be without Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny for up to a month due to Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Whilst it can be argued that only the former is a regular in Arteta’s side at the moment, Arsenal will be short in terms of depth during a busy stage of the season with Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles the senior options.

Furthermore, the latter has been tipped to join AS Roma this month which, if that deal goes through, almost certainly means the north London outfit will move for a central midfielder before the window closes.

As a result, a number of midfielders have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

This includes Lille’s Renato Sanches, former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum, Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and Bologna’s Mattias Svanberg.

Another name reportedly on Arsenal’ s radar is a familiar name in Bruno Guimaraes after links to the Brazilian first emerged in the January transfer window two years ago.

The 24-year-old ended up joining Lyon, but revealed in the summer that there was an approach from the Gunners for his services.

“Arsenal approached my agent, but there was no offer. My aim, and I made it clear to Juninho, is to win a title with Lyon,” the 24-year-old said to Globo via GFFN. “The fans have not had one for a long time. We have the Coupe de France, the Europa League and the league.

“It is difficult with the level that PSG are at, but anything can happen.”

Interestingly it would appear that Arsenal remain keen on Guimaraes as transfer specialist Nicolo Schira has revealed that talks are underway with Lyon to sign the Brazilian midfielder this month.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, the Ligue 1 side are set to demand £38million for their defensive midfielder.

So if Guimaraes was to join the Gunners, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the Brazil international holding the Arsenal shirt at his unveiling – but what squad number could he take at the Emirates Stadium?

Well, it would appear that he has one favoured option.

And it may be unusual to some as it’s the No.39 which he’s worn since joining Lyon and it is what he wore at former club Club Athletico Paranaense.

At Arsenal, there is currently no incumbent No.39.

In fact, this particular shirt number has not been in use since Hector Bellerin following his breakthrough 2014/15 season as he swiftly upgraded to No.24 for the next campaign.

This means Guimaraes could receive his dream number if he was to join Arsenal in the January transfer window.
