Eminent Archaeologist Ramachandran Nagaswamy Passed Away At 91

Indian historian archaeologist and epigraphist, Ramachandran Nagaswamy passed away at the age of 91. He was also known for his work on inscriptions of the temples and art history of Tamil Nadu. He was one of the most popular Indian historians in the country who is known for his work and gave his entire life to his career.

According to the sources, Nagaswamy took his last breath on Sunday, January 23, 2022, in Chennai. He was 91-years-old. The cause of his death has not been disclosed but the sources are believing that he died due to age-related factors.

Ramachandran Nagaswamy Death Reason

In his entire career, he has worked at several positions but is mainly known as a former director of the Government Archaeology Department in Tamil Nadu. He was also instrumental in starting the annual Chidambaram Natyanjali festival in 1980.

Since the news of his passing went viral on social media and reached to the politicians, they paid tribute to him and expressed their sorrow. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences on the passing of Nagaswamy.

Ramachandran Nagaswamy was born on August 10, 1930, in Madras, Madras Presidency British Raj. He took his graduation in Sanskrit from the University of Madras and pursued a degree of master in Sanskrit. He also obtained his Ph.D. in arts and archaeology from the University of Poona.

He underwent archaeological training under the Archaeological Survey of India and joined the Government Museum, Chennai as a curator for art and archaeology. He began his career for art and archaeology in the Government Museum in Chennai from 1959 to 63.

His subject was a popular subject in the youth and children of Tamil Nadu. He encouraged thousands of college and school students to maintain the cleanness in the nearby place of historical monuments. In his entire career, he was honored by several achievements. He was honored by the Kalaimamani award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his pathbreaking work on Sekkilar’s Periyapuranam.

Along with this, Ramachandran Nagaswamy also appeared as an Expert Witness in the London High Court, in the London Nataraj case. He was awarded by Padma Bhushan award in the year 2018.
