ODM leader Raila Odinga’s pointman in the Kalenjin-dominated part of the Rift Valley region has been named, as the 2022 elections speed in.
The former Premier is keen on succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta, with the Rift Valley vote being among those he seeks to use to capture the seat.
This is even as the Kalenjin part of the region is seen as the turf of his opponent, Deputy President William Ruto, who is seen as having it fully behind him.
But it has emerged that the former Premier isn’t giving up on the vote and has even picked the man he intends to use to campaign for him there.
Elgeyo Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos has admitted that he has been given that job, adding that he will do it but not for his sake but for his people.
“Some of these people from our region claiming that Raila is not a good person supported him in 2007 when some of us were in the periphery. Now, I am fully behind Raila’s candidacy because what he would have done for our people in 2007 had he clinched power is the same things he will do next year when elected since he has not changed,”he told The Nation.
Interestingly, Tolgos only recently, barely two weeks ago, declared his support for KANU’s Gideon Moi, saying that it is only through him that Kalenjins will be in next government.
“As the Kalenjin community, we must agree that we will be in government after the 2022 elections. We cannot be in the opposition. And the ultimate goal for the Kalenjin community is to eventually take the top seat,” the county chief told The Standard.
Moi had since officiated his bid, with Raila set to do the same later in the month
