#EFCC: Poly student found guilty of $1,500 Fraud

On Wednesday, 2 October 2019, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Enugu Zone, granted the verdict of one Josephat Ani before the High Court of Justice Ibrahim Buba, Enugu. He was prosecuted on one count, bordering on impersonation and obtaining a false pretense of $1,500.

Ani was arrested on 2 September 2019 on the basis of information linking him to identity theft, impersonation and defrauding unsuspecting victims of their money.

He was arrested on one count on 30 September 2019. The complaint reads,’that you, Josephat Ani, at one time in 2019 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honorable tribunal, in an effort to deceive General Nelson Moore of the United States International Leave Committee, Syria Peace Keeping Office: and, under the pretext of that, you gained by receiving the amount of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1,500) from one Cindy Sullivan:

Ani pleaded guilty to the charges. The prosecution’s lawyer, Eunice Vou Dalyop, asked the court to convict the defendant.

The defendant’s lawyer, J.C. Ene, pleaded with the court to balance justice with grace as the accused was the first offender, a student studying at the Covenant Polytechnic, Aba. He said Ani was remorseful.

Consequently, the judge convicted Ani and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment from the date of his detention.

It is also to forfeit to the Federal Government, the HP Laptop with serial number CNU1392YNN, and the iphone 7 with IMEI number 3533230716015. The items are to be sold and the proceeds paid to the Consolidated Revenue Fund, while the $1,500 is to be paid back to the victim, Cindy Sullivan.
