Late British singer, Amy Winehouse‘s best friend, Tyler James said the late RnB/jazz star confessed to spending £500,000 pounds on drugs. He also added that her addiction led to her losing out on working on one of the Bond films.
In a recent editorial piece, James opened up about the singer’s struggles with drugs. This is coming as the ten year anniversary of her death approaches. James pens down an exposé piece on Daily Mail on Sunday highlighting some of the singer’s regrets.
James also wrote on Winehouse’s failed rehab attempt in 2007 and her relationship with her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. He explained that she smuggled drugs into exclusive parties and got sedated by a local doctor once after running out of drugs.
Winehouse’s best friend revealed that he had been comforted by Rockstar, Mick Jagger on one occasion. Jagger had told him, “don’t worry, man, she’ll be all right. People in that world go through this sort of thing.” He added that Jagger also told him that Winehouse was a rockstar and it was normal that she went through this sort of phase.
Winehouse and James have been friends since their teenage years. However, it wasn’t until 2004 when they were in their early 20s that started to show signs of obsessive compulsive disorder. The pair were flatmates at the time, living together in a flat in Camden, London.
Winehouse’s best friend speaks on drug abuse
James revealed that Winehouse first grew addicted to alcohol. She would suggest that they go to the pub every morning to play pool. He explained that the daytime drinking led to her meeting people who introduced her to hard drugs.
Winehouse met her ex-husband, Fielder-Civil at one of the nights she was out drinking. However. she had expressed concerns about their relationship because of his heroin addiction. Eventually, they both got married while they were “high as kites on drugs and booze” according to James.
James also revealed that it was Fielder-Civil who first introduced Winehouse to heroin. The addiction went on to be the reason she missed out on many opportunities. She had been asked to write and record the theme for the James Bond film, Quantum Of Solace.
However, music executive Mark Ronson cancelled the opportunity after learning about her drug habit. According to James, Winehouse once said: “I spent about 500 grand on drugs, it’s a mug’s game. I could’ve bought a house. I could’ve bought you a house.”
Winehouse died of excess alcohol intake on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27.
