Amazon Music: Disney Plus Free for Six Months to New Subscribers

Amazon and Disney have teamed for a new promotion — designed to boost subscriber rolls for Disney Plus as well as the ecommerce giant’s Amazon Music Unlimited service.

Starting this week, new Amazon Music Unlimited customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive six months of Disney Plus for no extra charge. Existing Amazon Music Unlimited customers will receive three months of Disney Plus.

Amazon Music customers can visit this link to redeem the free Disney Plus offer. According to the companies, current Disney Plus subscribers are ineligible for the limited-time promotion.

Amazon Music Unlimited, which offers some 60 million songs and curated playlists and stations, costs $7.99/month for Prime members and $9.99/month for everyone else. Disney Plus is regularly $7.99/month in the U.S. and $11.99 CAD in Canada (after a price hike this spring).

For Disney, the promotional pact with Amazon comes after Disney Plus netted 8.7 million customers in the first three months of the year — below analyst expectations. The Mouse House reported 103.6 million subscribers for its flagship direct-to-consumer package as of April 3, about a year and half after initial launch. Disney also has a distribution deal with Verizon, which currently offers the Disney streaming bundle (Disney Plus, Hulu, ESPN Plus) for no additional charge to customers on certain unlimited wireless plans.

Likewise, Amazon is looking to lure more paying customers for its music-streaming service, which competes primarily with Spotify and Apple Music. In January 2020, Amazon Music announced that it had topped 55 million users worldwide, including Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers.

In announcing the promo, Amazon Music called out Disney Plus recent premieres like Disney/Pixar’s “Luca” and Marvel series “Loki” and noted upcoming series, including “Monsters at Work” (July 7) and “Turner & Hooch” (July 21).

Disney Plus is the streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, along with full seasons of “The Simpsons” and original series like “The Mandalorian,” “The Falcon and the Winter Solider” and “WandaVision.” In select international markets, Disney Plus is incorporated into the media conglom’s new general entertainment content brand, Star.
