Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) seized three money-laundering (popularly called wash-wash) suspects in a sting operation in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area.
The raid carried out on September 2, 2021 saw the sleuths acting on credible intelligence storm the apartment in Kileleshwa, Nairobi in a bid to stem out the vice that appears to be on the rise in the country, with several suspects so far arrested and billions of fake currencies recovered.
During the operation, the DCI Transnational Organized Crime detectives seized assorted fake local and foreign currencies.
Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths launched an operation at Midea Apartment’s house number 101, therein ambushing Abdulaziz Ibrahim Hassan, 54, Dorcas Ntoya, 34, and 26-year-old Arum Bob Busimbi.
According to the DCI, the three are believed to be part of a wider syndicate that is behind the rising cases of money laundering in the country, commonly known as wash wash.
Nairobi/Kenya has in recent days turned into a hotspot for fake gold scammers and fake currency fraudsters as the wash-wash gang spreads its tentacles.

A thourough search conducted at the basement parking of the building saw the officers recover three copies of a fake letter purportedly from Central Bank of Kenya, notifying receipt of Ksh10 billion, and two copies of United Nation invoices, in a Honda Fit KCY 695X.
The sleuths recovered more evidence from the car, which is owned by one of the suspects, among them a forged anti-money laundering clearance certificate, a packet of white powder labeled ‘Best Quality Laundry Starch’, a bottle containing a bluish substance, 45 USD notes in 100 denominations and 166 notes of Kenyan currency in Ksh1000 denominations.
The operation was not short of drama as the caretaker of the building unsuccessfully attempted to block the police from conducting the search.
54-yr-old Ethan Mureithi vehemently obstructed the detectives from conducting the operation within the facility was also arrested and will face appropriate charges.

The raid comes in at a time when wash-wash news is making headlines following an expose by blogger Edgar Obare who linked several well-known celebrities and politicians linked to the vice.
In the wake of the expose, the blogger’s Instagram account was deactivated in unclear circumstances.
