Senate Refuses Nnamdi Anyaechie, Appointee To The National Assembly

The Senate rejected Mr Nnamdi Anyaechie’s nomination as member of the National Assembly Service Commission on Wednesday. It followed the adoption by its President, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano Central), of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service’s report to the Plenary. Shekarau told lawmakers the candidate had not appeared for confirmation hearing. The upper legislative chamber however backed Engr’s appointment. Ahmed Kadi Amshi as committee chairman, and 11 others as members.

Members approved include: Babagana Module, Borno; Abubakar Tutare, Taraba; Hakeem Akamo, Lagos; Tunrayo Akintomide, Ondo; Atanomeyorwi Francis, Delta; Bassey Etuk, Akwa Ibom; Bailyaminu Yusuf Shinkafi, Zamfara; Sani Saidu Kazaure, Jigawa; Julius Ucha, Ebonyi; Auwalu Aliyu Ohindase, Kogi and Muazu Is’haq, Nasarawa.

In the meantime, the Senate also approved Prof Adeolu Akande’s appointment as chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Mr. Uche Onwude as senator. Nonetheless, Senator Adeola Solomon (Lagos West) said NCC’s former chairman, Olabiyi Durojaiye, served just three years instead of five years, and was not given the opportunity to resign.

He said the Durojaiye should be given the chance to resign in the interests of integrity. Senate President Ahmad Lawan said the Red Chamber sympathized with Mr Durojaiye as a former Senator but added that president Muhammadu Buhari holds the prerogative of nominations. “This Senate will always try to ensure that due processes are adhered to, but I think this is an issue that can better be dealt with in the administration rather than in the Senate,” he said.
