Arsenal’s Football Manager Raul Sanllehi has confirmed that Unai Emery’s goal this season is to finish in the top four after gaining significant support in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners were just shy of qualifying for the competition last season, finishing fifth in the Premier League by one point and losing the Europa League final to London’s Chelsea rivals.
Arsenal invested a lot in the summer to try and get back to Europe’s leading club competition, smashing their transfer record to sign Nicolas Pepe in a £72 million move from Lille.
Emery was also given a new center-back in the form of David Luiz as well as Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, while Dani Ceballos was on loan from Real Madrid.
And Sanllehi, who spoke at the fans ‘ forum on Thursday night, believes that the level of investment means that Emery can’t afford to finish off the top four for a second time.
The ex-Chief of Barcelona explained:’ We told Unai that we just missed out on qualifying for the Champions League last year, but this year with a strong squad, we expect you to do that.’
The REDaction Gooners fan group tweeted a number of notable posts from the forum–including Sanllehi’s response to Mesut5-007’s ax–while he was highly supportive about Tierney at a largely positive conference.
Arsenal is actually fifth in the Premier League table, nine points behind Liverpool’s leaders, and has won four of their opening eight games.
